Entheogens, Mysticism and Sexual Liberation
The sexual liberation of the 60’s went hand in hand with a rise in the use of entheogenic substances and the practice of spiritual and religious teachings. In this dialogue, we will explore the relationship between mystical or spiritual experiences and sexual liberation, drawing from historical religious traditions like Buddhism and Yoga, as well as our own personal experiences.
Dr. Jay Michaelson is an author, activist, and academic. He is currently a Visiting Scholar at Brown University, Director of the LGBT Global Rights Initiative at the Democracy Council, and a weekly columnist for the Forward and the Daily Beast. Jay is the author of five books and over three hundred articles on religion, sexuality, law, and contemplative practice. His most recent book, Evolving Dharma: Meditation, Buddhism, and the Next Generation of Enlightenment, was published in 2013 by North Atlantic. Other books include God vs. Gay? The Religious Case for Equality, an Amazon bestseller and Lambda Literary Award finalist; Everything is God: The Radical Path of Nondual Judaism; and Another Word for Sky: Poems. His work has been featured on NPR, CNN, and in The New York Times.
Jeff Bausemer is one of the event organizers for Axis Mundi, and the official event organizer for Evolver in NYC. He studied philosophy at St. John’s College in New Mexico and is a licensed massage therapist, Taoist and Tantric yogic practitioner, and student of herbalism and plant medicine.
